6 Common Foods Low in Sodium

Protein foods

Fresh or frozen poultry, seafood, and meats should be picked over processed ones. When you buy a packaged food, look if it has a Nutritional Facts label, if it does, check for 5% DV or less.

  • Eggs.
  • Nuts and seeds that are unsalted.
  • Dried peas and beans such as black beans, kidney beans, split beans, kidney beans, lentils, black-eyed beans, and chickpeas.
  • Lean pork or beef cuts.
  • When you buy canned beans, check its label, and buy the ones labeled with “low sodium” or “no salt added”.
  • Frozen or fresh fish or shellfish.
  • Turkey or chicken breast that has no skin or marinade.

Dairy

Some Cheese can be very high in sodium, so make sure to check the label. Also, pick dairy products that are fat-free or have low-fat.

  • Soy milk with calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin A added.
  • Fat-free or low-fat milk (1%).
  • Fat-free or low-fat plain, unsweetened yogurt.
  • Reduced or low sodium cheese.
