High Phosphorus Foods to Avoid For a Healthy Kidney

Brown Rice

Brown rice has several similarities with whole wheat bread. It is also a whole grain that contains higher levels of potassium and phosphorus than white rice. A cup (155g) of cooked brown rice contains 149 mg of phosphorus and 95 mg of potassium, while 1 cup (186 g) of cooked rice contains only 69 mg of phosphorus and 54 mg of potassium. It is possible to fit brown rice into a renal diet, but only if the portion is well balanced with other meals to avoid an excessive daily intake of phosphorus and potassium. Couscous, pearled barley, buckwheat, and bulgur are good substitute brown rice because they contain lower phosphorus levels. [1]
