Iodine

Taking in sufficient iodine is important for thyroid function, which regulates metabolism. A deficiency of this element in pregnant women and early infancy would lead to intellectual disability. Insufficient intake in adults could result in hypothyroidism, which is characterized by many symptoms like weight gain, depression, forgetfulness, dry skin, low energy, and tingling in the feet and hands. The recommended daily intake of iodine for adults is around 150 mcg. It can be found in dairy products, seaweed, seafood, and iodized salt. Vegans who do not consume seaweed or iodize salt should take iodine supplements to meet their daily needs.[5]
