Signs And Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

Clicking sounds at the temporomandibular joint

Patients may hear clicking sounds at the temporomandibular joint when the disorder is arthritis, specifically rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Both conditions can cause cartilage damage in the TMJ, which causes movement difficulties, hence the popping/clicking sounds. Jaw movements like opening and closing the mouth causes the disc to shift inside the joint which popping sounds. The sounds may be loud enough for a close-standing person to hear.

Stiff or locked jaw joint

Damage to the TMJ is likely to cause a tight jaw [6]. This can cause discomfort in specific areas of the body, including the face, jaw, nose, mouth, or ears. This symptom can significantly alter your daily life as it will affect speech and eating abilities. A locked jaw can be relieved with massaging or other relaxation techniques.

Note that all of these symptoms can be signs of other health conditions asides from temporomandibular joint disorder, so you must visit your medical practitioner for the correct diagnosis.
