Alcoholic Beverages and High Fats Diet
Alcoholic beverages (mixed drinks, beers and wines) should be avoided by patients with gastritis. Alcohol even in its minutest quantity causes gastric irritation and causes stimulation of gastric acid, it is therefore safe for patients experiencing symptoms of gastritis to stay clear of alcoholic beverages completely until their symptoms resolve. Alcohol can also trigger gastritis, independent of other factors, it is necessary therefore that after the resolution of gastritis, they consume alcohol in very small quantity (maximum of two cups daily) to avoid recurrence or the onset of alcoholic gastritis.
Foods that are rich in fats including fatty meats, margarine, cakes, biscuits, palm oils, coconut oils etc. should be avoided. This is because these foods have been found to worsen the inflammation of the mucous membrane, and perpetuating the symptoms of pain, discomfort and bleeding associated with gastritis.
