Milk and Coffee

Milk usually provide a temporary succor for patients with gastritis, but in the long-run it has a deleterious effect. In the long run, the consumption of milk increases the level of acid in the stomach, this worsens the symptoms of gastritis. Milk is composed of protein and calcium, these two have the propensity to increase gastric acid production in the stomach. A research [5] carried out to compare the level of acid secretion after consumption of milk in patients with duodenal ulcer and those without any ulcers show that its consumption increases the acid secretion in the stomach significantly. It is therefore very important for patients with gastritis to stay clear of milk.
Coffee is a widely consumed drink, with psychoactive properties but it is a drink that patients with gastritis should be wary of. This is because of its high acidic and caffeine content. The acid present will increase the stimulation and production of gastric acids while the caffeine will increase the rate of gastric irritation. Decaffeinated coffee is not an option either because it still causes a level of gastric irritation though reduced. It is advisable to stay off coffee until symptoms resolve completely.
