Is Medicare Mandatory?

Can You Delay Medicare?

Yes, you can delay the medicare insurance. Once you are 65 and above or you are disabled, you are automatically issued the medicare insurance. Normally, it is advised that when you are eligible for this insurance, you should sign up immediately. Signing up late can attract a lot of penalties. There are some conditions that may not attract penalties even when you sign up late. For instance, if you are already covered by a plan provided by your employer, you can decide to apply late and this won’t attract any penalty.

However, you can decide to defer this insurance due to some reasons. Some of the reasons you might want to delay the medicare insurance include:

  • You have a private health insurance issued to you by your employer in a private company
  • You are already covered by a TRICARE [3] or CHAMPVA [4] plan.
  • You are already covered by a plan given to your partner by her employer.

It is important that you discuss with your current insurer when you choose to delay your medicare insurance. They will explain the merits and demerits of delaying medicare insurance.
