Medicare Waiting Period: Waivers, Options, and Costs

Waiting period exceptions

Most people with SSDI benefits have to wait for two years to begin their Medicare coverage. However, there are some exceptions. For example, if you have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [5] (ALS), or end stage renal disease [6] (ESRD), Medicare may relinquish the waiting period to ensure you get your healthcare benefits early.

Waiver for people with ESRD

ESRD occurs when the activities of the renal system are affected. People with chronic kidney disease are more susceptible to this condition. ESRD is a severe health condition that can be treated with kidney transplant surgery or dialysis. Your kidneys will not function properly if you don’t receive proper treatment early.

Eligibility

If you have ESRD, you don’t have to wait for 2 years before your Medicare coverage starts. In most cases, the waiting period is shorter, and Medicare starts on the first day of the first month of your dialysis treatment.

Medicare coverage may start one year before you apply. This is referred to as retroactive coverage. For example, if you begin dialysis in a hospital on November 1 and they don’t allow you to sign up for Medicare until the following June, Medicare shifts their coverage to February 1. In most cases, the coverage starts in the first month of dialysis for people who finish a Medicare-approved training school for at-home dialysis treatment.

It would help to know that you cannot apply for a Medicare Advantage plan if you have ESRD. You can only get your healthcare benefits via original Medicare.
